Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality (AR) has caught my eye on the news and forums several time’s now, time to investigate! First I’ll explain what the words Augmented Reality mean. Fortunately I do Latin at my school and immediately knew what augmented meant. The adjective augmented origins from the Latin verb: augere, which means to enlarge. The synonym enlarged reality is close to self-explanatory, AR enlarges your field of sight by added objects and information only the technology behind it remains a mystery for most of the readers. By digging through heaps of information and tutorials I was finally able to create a web-based AR driven application.

In this clear tutorial I will show you how to build your own AR application. Prior I am going to explain what we’re going to make here. The idea is to create an application that is accessible to everyone. So no space-goggles created by mad-scientists involved here. Our application is going to use a printer and a webcam and flash-player. Three things that the modern human has or can easily obtain. The printer has the function to print a marker (what I would describe as a recognition panel). The action-script 3 code behind the webcam recognizes the marker and adds in our case a 3D-model of the Eiffel-tower. I recommend downloading this file, it contains all the equipment you need. The advanced can now skip ahead and play around with the files. The others should download the file as well, otherwise you will have to create the entire directory yourself. In the next steps I’m going to build the application from scratch. Read more…
